Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings includes abstracts of all papers and symposia presented at the annual conference, plus 6-page abridged versions of the “Best Papers” accepted for inclusion in the program (approximately 10%). Papers published in the Proceedings are abridged because presenting papers at their full length could preclude subsequent journal publication. Ontological Profiling of Leadership Research: Illuminating the Blind Spots

We explore the canvas of leadership to establish the ontology of leadership, as perceived in the dominant worldview through the method of ontological and definition profiling of Leadership. Our review revealed that most research was dominated by a paradigm emanating from a worldview which was non-integrative or pursuant of synthetic integration. Often, Scholars seemed to jump to analysis of variables and data before epistemological discussions were settled with the definitions of leadership. There is a need for an integrative strategy for leadership theory building. This article contributes ontologically through a review of leadership literature to illuminate the blind spots in fundamental aspects of leadership in an integrative way. It suggests to bring ‘leadership research’ philosophically closer to advances in ‘fundamental research’ and in physical sciences to benefit from each other. It suggests the development of an integrated paradigm by tapping into ancient traditions of the world; and the development of customized models from leaders’ and organizations’ own worldviews rather than forcing themselves to fit into models born out of different worldviews. With this article we have introduced a new way of analyzing a field and adding to the literature review.
