Intercultural Communication Challenges: How Different When Working for Domestic MNCs VS Foreign MNCs

This paper investigates the differences of intercultural communication challenges facing employees from the same country when working for ¡°domestic MNCs in host country¡± VS ¡°foreign MNCs in home country¡±, using in-depth interviews with 48 Chinese employees from 28 above two types of MNCs. The results indicate that intercultural communication contexts and challenging issues facing Chinese employees, and the strategies used to cope with above challenges in the two types of MNCs, are different significantly. This paper further finds that the locations of the workplace (i.e. in home country or in host country), the phase of internationalization of the firms and the stage of intercultural sensitivity of Chinese employees result in above differences. Based on above results, this paper identifies two internal and three external intercultural communication contexts, and finds that the intercultural communication challenges in above contexts appear as the conflicting issues in business and management, but are caused by differences in interests, position and culture which are interweaved. To sum up, the conclusions enrich international business theories and intercultural communication theories, and offer guidelines to cultivate international talents for the MNCs from emerging economies.
