Extending community-based enterprise theory: The example of community-specific currencies

In this study we center on extending the community-based theory. This theory has stimulated a new stream of research addressing development in poor communities by drawing attention to entrepreneurial initiatives that support collective interests. Nonetheless, community-based enterprises may achieve greater development depending on different entrepreneurial approaches and contextual factors. Our analysis focuses on community-specific currencies as examples of community-based enterprises which have been promoted in various locations as a means to reduce poverty and achieve social goals. We investigate how entrepreneurial approaches are associated with different levels of community- specific currency development depending on different institutional conditions such as political and legal factors. We develop a conceptual framework identifying entrepreneurial actions and institutional conditions that influence the development of new community-specific currencies as community-based enterprises, thereby contributing to the community-based enterprise theory.
