Sex in the Board Room: Board Gender Diversity and Firm Competitive Behavior
Abstract
Drawing insights from the upper-echelons theory, organizational demography literature and competitive dynamics perspective, we hypothesize a positive relationship between board gender diversity and firm competitive aggressiveness. More importantly we explore the moderating effects of power (male-female director status equality and network complementarity) and social (male-female director socio-behavioral integration) contexts on the relationship. Our analyses of 21 pharmaceutical firms over a fifteen-year period largely support our hypotheses.
