Despite the considerable amount of studies suggesting the adequate strategies to follow along the business cycle, few have investigated the effect of psychological biases on decision-making processes through expansionary and recessionary phases of the economy and their impact on firm performance. We focused on the effect of one particular bias, CEO overconfidence, and propose that overconfident CEOs may enhance firms performance during non-recession years, moderate the adverse effects of a recession and hinder their companys performance during economic downturns in highly procyclical industries. We analyzed the impact of CEO overconfidence on the ROE of publicly listed US firms from 1992-2015, a period that includes the bursting of the dot-com bubble in 2001 and the Great Recession of 2008-2009. We strongly supports our hypotheses.

Responsible innovation holds the dual promise of increasing competitiveness and tackling grand societal challenges by making sure that new products and services avoid causing harm and do good. We first propose that for this duality to succeed, companies need to embark in open innovation characterized by deep interactions with a large breadth of different stakeholders. We further argue that such open innovation approach on responsible innovation goes beyond the degree of openness typically found in traditional innovation as it does not reach saturation and substitutability effects. We test our predictions in a sample of companies in high-polluting industry sectors and find support for our hypothesized unique attributes of responsible innovation. Our results advance research on responsible innovation and have critical implications for managers.

The average business training program for entrepreneurs in developing countries makes little to no impact on business practices (McKenzie & Woodruff, 2014). This is a crucial problem to solve as business practices are a significant predictor of business success. This study uses a partially randomized control trial to investigate the impact a specific training activity, learning contracts, will make on the business practices of entrepreneurs enrolled in a business training program in Peru. The results of this study will add to our understanding of what makes a business training program for entrepreneurs effective for helping entrepreneurs adopt better business practices. NOTE: This study is ongoing and scheduled for completion in December 2019.

This research investigates the correlation between the diversity background of top management team (TMT) and firm performance. We target cultural diversity and gender diversity and also explore the interplay between TMT diversity attributes and other TMT conventional compositions and their effects on organization performance. Incorporating four dimensions into this analysis under TMT conventional compositions such as TMT tenure, TMT network, TMT scale, and TMT age, this paper utilizes the OSIRIS database to obtain a dataset of 442 U.S.-listed companies in the information technology field. The research adopts multiple regression analysis to examine the proposed hypotheses and applies fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to figure out the optimal combinations between top management team diversities and conventional compositions in order to achieve better firm performance.

This paper aims to contribute to the corporate political activities (CPA) field by suggesting the influence of campaign contributions on the time that firms wait for regulators decisions. In words, it shows evidence that CPA speeds up the regulators decisions. We conducted an ordinary least squares (OLS) regression with robustness control on a sample of 358 mergers and acquisitions (M&A) events from 2008 to 2017 in Brazil, to measure the effect of campaign contributions over the time of M&A regulators decisions. This study finds that campaign contributions reduce the waiting time for M&A decisions made by Brazilian regulator, as well as the value of donations is positively related to a reduction in this waiting time. The contribution is in theoretical-empirical development of corporate political activities.

Scholars have increasingly recognized the relevance of Subjective Well-Being (SWB), as a measure of wellness. However, literature has relatively neglected the factors that impact the SWB of faculty members who, ironically, in many cases are those who research the topic. Therefore, the aim of this study is to achieve a better understanding of the institutional pressures that may influence academic facultys SWB in business schools transitioning from a teaching-oriented to a research-oriented model in the context of an emerging economy. This study seeks to illuminate what business schools can change in order to increase facultys well-being. Drawing on a qualitative study, this research project analyzes how institutional pressures affect personal, economic and social factors of faculty members SWB.

This study examines how employees exposure to interpersonal conflict might reduce the likelihood that they undertake creative behavior, and how this negative connection might be mitigated by their access to two personal resources (emotion regulation and empathy) and two contextual resources (role clarity and informational fairness). Data from employees in a Mexican-based organization concur that interpersonal conflict thwarts creativity, but this effect is weaker when employees can more easily control their emotions, have clearly described job descriptions, and are happy with how their employer communicates with them. Empathy exhibits only a weak buffering effect. For human resource managers in Latin America, these findings accordingly reveal different means through which they can overcome the challenge that arises when emotion-based conflicts steer employees away from creativity.

This research contributes to the study of subnational phenomena and SOEs internationalization by comparing the expansion abroad of Subnational SOEs (SSOEs) and Central SOEs (CSOEs). Through a qualitative comparative case analysis, we find that SSOEs fewer resources and needs to increase income push them to follow a gradual market-driven internationalization. These incentives also push SSOEs to diversify abroad. CSOEs non-gradual growth is justified by non-market factors (i.e. national politics). We posit that SOEs financial freedom becomes crucial to achieve a sustainable international trajectory. Irrespective of the ownership type, financial freedom encourages international reversals due to political and financial pressures.

Los Programas a la Medida (PM) son un recurso de aprendizaje desarrollado por las escuelas de negocios con el cual solucionan necesidades de formación de las organizaciones, y que cada vez atienden problemáticas más complejas. Esto ha requerido comprender las variables de fracaso y de éxito, las cuales hasta ahora han sido poco estudiadas. Para investigar estos factores hemos utilizado el estudio comparativo de casos, en el análisis de nueve programas ejecutados en seis países de Latinoamérica. Encontramos diez factores que habilitan o limitan una implementación exitosa. Los hallazgos de este estudio exploratorio brindan fundamentos teóricos para comprender la colaboración en el campo de la educación ejecutiva, ofrecen criterios para optimizar la ejecución de los PM, y abren nuevas líneas de investigaciones futuras.

The implementation of compliance programs has become mainstream among large multinational companies. However, to what extent they are adopted as a legitimation mechanism or as an anti-corruption strategy requires further research. Based on a case study of a Brazilian multinational company involved in a major corruption scandal, this study examines how multiple forces shape the adoption of compliance programs and how are they translated into practice. Using Critical Discourse Analysis, our preliminary findings suggest a disconnect between the stated objectives of compliance tools and the antecedents of corruption. In this regard, mitigating corruption would be secondary to legitimacy restoration.

This paper addresses consumers and businesses who have developed unique characteristics, behaviors and interactions; being part of what is analyzed and labelled as sophisticated markets. Some of the new dynamics that consumers and businesses show include a heightened interest in quality and the concomitant development of entities and mechanisms designed to ensure certain standards, as well as an increased level of involvement of the consumer with the product. This process of sophistication might occur or be on its way to occur in different industries. This process and these changes in consumer behavior are the main focus of this work, which presents a set of conceptual propositions that might acknowledge the existence of the proposed concept and guide future research around it.

The idea behind impact investing is that investors may pursue financial returns and at the same time, address social and environmental objectives. Crowdfunding materializes as an alternative to democratize impact investing through its socio-technical practice that has the potential to transform financial and sustainability regimes. This growing source of alternative finance is encouraging SMEs to instill social responsibility practices in a sustainable supply chain. Additionally, this base of sustainable projects develops into a set of opportunities for conventional capital investors to engage on impact investing experiences. Drawing on a qualitative case study on a Mexican lending-based crowdfunding platform, this article illuminates how crowdfunding creates impact investment opportunities for individuals who believe that impact investing can make a difference.

This study investigates the influence of economic growth on CO2 emissions levels in three developed countries—Argentina, Equatorial Guinea, and South Korea—based on their status as high-income countries. We test the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis using ARDL, FMOLS, DOLS, CCR and VECM methods to check the relationship and direction of causality among the variable time-series for 1974–2014. The results show an inverted U-shaped short-run relationship in all three countries. In the long run, only South Korea supports the EKC hypothesis. Further, Granger causality results indicate existence of causality. These long-run causal relationships between economic growth and emissions indicate that wealthy governments must expand investments in renewable clean energy projects and R&D, with regulatory measures to suppress harmful environmental procedures and support environmentally friendly development.

Current research on cybersecurity revolves around the technical aspects of its implementation. While a developing body of work around firm digitization, digital strategy, and digital entrepreneurship exists, the field of strategic management has remained silent on the development and implementation of cybersecurity strategy. At best, we can extrapolate from research on strategy-making some guidance for practitioners, but, cybersecurity strategy does not fit into typical definitions of corporate, competitive, or functional-level strategy. Cybersecurity strategy crosses functions, business units, and entire firms. In a similar vein to GEs digital strategy spanning the entire corporation, cybersecurity strategy also needs such priority across the corporate body. This panel symposium will expand on what current research offers to action and what directions must be followed next from an action perspective.

This study explores the associations between employee social class, gender and supervisory support and employees subjective outcomes at work and at home. Using survey data collected from 2,399 employees within the Mexican divisions of seven leading multinational corporations, our study suggests that supervisors in Mexico are "investing" in more privileged women, who also experience higher levels of job satisfaction and happiness at home, and lower levels of work-life conflict.

This study contributes to the systematic understanding about differential behavior over success factors of Socially Oriented Ventures (SOVs) in the LATAM Region and other countries, answering two questions: What general factors affect the probability of success of SOVs in accelerator programs surveyed in the Entrepreneurship Database Program at Emory University?, and if is there a differential success behavior for LATAM firms? These questions will be addressed with a logistic regression model, and the effect of the entrepreneurial landscape analyzed through efficiency measures calculated with Data Envelopment Methods, using Entrepreneurial Framework Conditions under the GEM framework as inputs and diverse performance behaviors as outputs. This study generates more possibilities for investigating the impact of socio-economic and cultural influences on the efficacy of entrepreneurial support mechanisms.

This symposium is designed to provide less experienced qualitative scholars the opportunity to learn directly from more seasoned researchers willing to share their own experiences and insights into the process of designing and conducting high-quality and impactful qualitative work. Panelists will lead exchanges around topics such as understanding the expectations of premier journals; designing data collection and analysis processes; writing a first research draft; refining a manuscript before journal submission; and dealing with the editor and reviewers during the review process.

The purpose of this paper is to develop a generalized 7 P-theoretical framework for entrepreneurial internationalization (Potential, Path, Process, Pace, Pattern, Problems and Performance) of a firm with testable propositions based on the systematic review of literature on internationalization of Latin American firms. We present 7 P-framework as a benchmark typology for internationalization of firms from any similar geographical regions, cultures, or industries. We found that firms from emerging markets, in particular, Latin America face many challenges such as Cognitive Bias, Liability of foreignness and Resource constraints, while internationalizing their operations. We propose P-framework to carry out firm/industry level analysis while going international. Finally, we provide several recommendations for future research.

This paper aims to test the ARCTIC framework to assess the prerequisites of competence-based synergy in the acquisition process. To reach this aim, the following research question has been considered: How should core competences be evaluated as sources of synergy in an acquisition? The author researched the latest theoretical findings on the antecedents of synergy in the M&A processes. Based on an in-depth literature review, an ARCTIC framework was developed and tested. The author selected two case studies to test the methodology empirically, namely, LOréals Body Shop acquisition in 2006 and divestiture in 2017, and the recent acquisition of The Body Shop by Natura Cosméticos. The research identified four steps for exploring whether core competence transfer in M&A processes is an important source of synergies.

Innovation often involves combining heterogeneous resources within the firm. This paper looks for the existence of complementarities between the involvement of R&D personnel and employees of any other department of the firm in innovation activities. Empirical evidence is drawn from firm-level data obtained from a series of innovation surveys conducted in Colombia by DANE. Extensive and intensive margins of innovation are considered. We use the propensity to innovate, as well as the number of new innovative products that the firm introduces, the proportion of sales coming from products new to the firm, and sales from new products as a percentage of current innovation expenditures. We found no evidence of the existence of a complementarity relationship. Some evidence suggests substitutability in the case of product innovations.
